File-Sharing Winners & Losers of 2005: RIAA = Loser.

"Most people, I think, don't even know what a Rootkit is, so why should they care about it?"

Remember those words? They're true. Most people didn't know what a rootkit was. But Sony-BMG gave us all an excellent education on rootkits, spyware, and Digital Rights Management.

With companies such as Sony-BMG installing rootkits and endangering their customer's computer security and the RIAA sueing 12 year olds and Grandmothers, it is no wonder that tech savvy people are even more willing to denounce these large, greedy, and anti-consumer corporations.

The ethical backlash Sony-BMG has created by using not only a rootkit, but infringing on GPL'ed software rights, has put them in an extremely negative light. The question becomes if Sony-BMG can infringe on the Intellectual Property rights of others, then how can they morally complain when their IP rights are infringed upon?

A truely tough question to answer.

While it is not right for people to steal anything, it is no less right to be the corporate 800 lb gorilla.

Sadly the worst offender in this whole deal is the U.S. Government whose greed surpasses that of the likes of the RIAA, the MPAA and the MPA. The lawmakers and corporations think that they have the right to impose their Laws upon the rest of the world. The lawmakers don't even listen to those that voted them in office. Instead they take huge :bribes" in the form of corporate donations to their campaign funds. (A practice that clearly should be illegal.)

Someday, maybe the the big corporations, such as the RIAA, are monolithic constructs whose time has passed. It is time for the consumer and the artists to rise up and do something about this outdated business model.
